For your consideration we have here a excellent quality late Qing period Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer covered box performed in high relief with figures shown in a outdoor setting along with raised stylized lotus flowers and leafy scrolls in alternating groupings to the sides. This lacquer box was produced in Canton, China during the late Qing Dynasty and is probably a small fruit or food container with many coats of hand applied built up layers of lacquer over top a metal body with aqua blue enamel to the insides and bottom areas. This box is very well done with superb details all the way through with a pleasing deep red color tone and natural surface sheen and patina. The top area is packed with much subject matter with figures shown in leisurely pose surrounded by rockery and boulders as well as plants, bushes and trees having a double raised line to the top outside edge and the sides of both top and bottom sections show alternating raised groups of lotus flowers and scrolls all on geometric grounds with a low bottom foot ring. The shape of this box is quite interesting as I have not seen to many with a slightly domed top and outward sloping sides and where the bottom section would normally follow the same slope of the top section it instead continues outwards then sharply making a inward stretch. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, losses or repairs as the only thing I can see is where at one time many years ago the top and bottom metal bands that meet in the middle had been touched up as well as the foot ring with a bit of brighter red paint that went slightly over onto the cinnabar a bit but it can easily be removed and other than that it is a superb box. Sizes: Diameter 3-3/4\" x Height 2-1/4\". A great piece of old cinnabar to add to ones collection or simply a fine one to start with.
