Offeredfor sale is a very nice Seth Thomas Empire No. 13 Crystal Regulator. The clock has the porcelain dial and beveledglass in all panels. There are no chipsin any of the glass with the exception of one small chip in the lower corner of the back door, theface is in near perfect condition and the clock has the original hands. Both the front and back doors close nicelyand the movement, a round Seth Thomas 48R, has been completely and properlyrestored. As part of that restoration,all the pivots have been polished, the holes have been bushed where needed andburnished, and both mainsprings and the suspension spring have beenreplaced. The case is stamped on severalof the bottom and top panels with the number 13 as further evidence of themodel number. The clock can be found inLy’s Seth Thomas book, volume 1, on page 241.It is Item 734, gives 1907 as the date of manufacture and lists a valueof $650. Seth Thomas crystal regulatorscame in many sizes but this clock is one of the larger ones. That is why the book value on this clock isso much higher than many of the Seth Thomas crystal regulators that I have hadin the past. The clock was offered intwo colors, rich gold and bronze. Thisis the bronze color. I ask you to please examine the 12 high resolutionpictures carefully as they provide much of the description for this finetimepiece. Case dimensions are 7.5 incheswide, 12 inches high and 5.25 inches deep.Clock comes complete with the original faux mercury pendulum and whatappears to be the original winding key.

WHAT MAKES A CLOCK A GOOD VALUE?

The rules of economics are fairlystraightforward. Simply put, it isalmost impossible to spend a little and get a lot. Antique and vintage clocks follow these rulesas well. You can buy “As Found” clocksfor less money. Then you have to pay ashop to go through the movement and when you are done, you have spent more thanif you would have offer on the nicer clocks in the beginning. I have tried through the photos to show thebasic steps that I do in restoring these wonderful machines to their originalstate. My goal is to provide you with aquality time piece that will provide enjoyment and be a source of pride in yourhome for years to come. Equally importantto me is to provide you with a clock that I believe will retain its value overthe years. That is what I thinkconstitutes real value in antique and vintage clocks.

MY PHILOSOPHY ON CLOCKS AND CLOCK MOVEMENTS.

Theonly way to properly repair a movement is to completely disassemble, clean andinspect all parts, and make the needed repairs by proper horoligicalmethods. This includes the rebushing ofall worn holes and the polishing of any rough pivots. The movements are then reassembled, lubricatedwith a high quality clock oil and test run for 8 days. This is a very time intensive process but isthe only correct way to properly recondition a clock movement. You should expect a movement repaired in thismanner to run for ten years trouble-free.I have been doing clock repair for over 36 years. I apprenticed under an Oregon State licensedrepairman and have been a member of the National Association of Watch and ClockCollectors (NAWCC) since 1981. I do notmake a living doing this; it has become a passion of mine. I go to estate sales, sales, and searchplaces like and Craigslist to find clocks that are in need ofrestoration. Once they are made like newmechanically, I put them up for sale in the hopes of paying for my materials andupgrading my personal collection. Myhope is also to provide you with an heirloom to cherish for years to come.
