This beautiful antique and rare vase might be french, but it is not. This deep amethyst – violet and purple – color doesn\'t exist among the best french crystal factories, Baccarat, Saint-Louis, The Queen\'s Factory in Le Creusot… It was made by the Russian imperial glass factory in St Petersburg at the beginning of the 19th century.Russia always had extremely gifted craftsmen who created for the wealthy aristocracy their own unrivalred specialities : hard stone carving, ormolu, crystal, enameling (Fabergé…).
This tall vase with diamond cut mid part among sixteen faces has a great ormolu base mixing Empire leaves with Louis XV elements like laurel wreath and acanthus leaves. Gilding is fine, almost completely intact after two centuries.There is no chip, crack or line on the crystal. The lid has some small irregularities, probably a sign that there was once an ormolu ring on top.An almost identical pair (color less intense) to this vase is available on 1stdibs.com at a five figures price. A fantastic pair of vases from the same St. Petersburg factory sold at Christies a few years ago for 125,000 US$.As you can check on the pictures, the crystal has inside a beautiful thin hairy surface network that makes it so unique.The mount\'s base bolt was replaced.
