A Fabulous Pair of Antique French Estate18 1/4\" Valentine Vases with Gorgeous Floral Ormolu Mounts 1850Selected Antiques from Paris to your Door
A great and impressive pair of French porcelain floral vases by the Valentine Factory with wonderful and extensive ormolu mounts. On dark blue background, quite black as typical at Valentine, the vases show floral bunches reserves on both sides : delicate pink roses on one side, yellow, lilac and pink tulips on the other side. The almost black cobalt background is extensively enhanced by pure gold painted floral intricated patterns. The most impressive part of the vases are the intricated bronze ormolu mounts, deep mercury gilt with few losses. Before galvanization (electroplating), mercury gilding costed their lifes quite young to hundreds of specialized workers. The ormolu mercury gilding gives a matt or polished gilding without comparison as the gold layer is deeply mixed with the bronze surface. The Valentine Factory was the only porcelain factory in the South of France. It was founded in 1813-1814 by Joseph Jacques Fouque from a famous earthenware ceramists family from Moustiers, in front of the Valentine Hill : the porcelain production started 1832. The Fouque-Arnoux (Léon Arnoux, brother-in-law of Henri Fouque was 1849-1902 artistical director of Minton, Stoke-on-Trent) products, with an extremely white paste, cobalt blue (the famous \"Valentine Blue\") and chrome green backgrounds were soon highly praised by collectors and protected by the famous Director of the Sèvres Factory of the time, Alexandre Brongniart. The factory got as soon as 1836 a silver medal for its products at the French Industry Exhibition of 1834. The factory closed in 1890.
The porcelain vases have been professionally repaired : so good that it is extremely difficult to see what happened. Probably only hairs as no crack, hair, replaced or repaired area can be seen from outside The repairs are only detected by a white covering layer added inside near the top parts of both vases. A close examination from outside doesn\'t allow to find any repair.Gilding partly rubbed. Flower paintings with paint spread lacks (see detailed picture for the most damaged). Not signed : Valentine usually didn\'t sign.
The ormolu mounts, are unbelievable : made of six screwed parts for each vase, their are extremely finely modelled, chiseled and polished with floral and vegetal patterns, including grapes and vines. The heavy bases are in pure Louis XV baroque style. Both handles on each vase are twice thin screwed. The bronzes are stamped with a LF mark, which is probably the mark of the parisian Lerolle Frères foundry. Lerolle Frères was one of the leading Paris bronziers of the 19th century. They exhibited at all the major international exhibitions in Paris, London and New York (they had one of the largest foreign stands in NYC in 1853) : \"A time-honored firm that has long taken high-rank… Designs are by first-class artists, while modelling, moulding and chiselling and finish are combined with the skill that arises from long and continued experience\" (Comment from the Paris 1878 Exhibition). The market offers regularly high-end objects by Lerolle : for example the Candelabra ordered in Paris 1850 by Frederick 4th Earl Spencer (see Winston Churchill, Lady Diana) initially for the staircase of Spencer House in London, larger at Althorp.Very moderate gilding losses, no losses or damages to the mounts.
Market value : a high quality similar pair but without ormolu mounts is right now for sale from a first class dealer above US$ 13,000. Link on request.
The pair, probably a special order around 1845-1855, is offered at a very low price. It is quite heavy (almost 10 kg together) and will be sent carefully packed in two separated cartons : the risks of setting both of them in one is far too high and the shipping costs aren\'t significantly higher. Depending on the destination country and delay, I always try to find a cheaper parcel solution.A major enrichment for a collection or high-end decoration purpose.Data :Height : 18 1/4\" (46 cm)Width (largest, handles) : 10 1/4\" (26 cm)Base : 8 1/2\" (21,( cm)Net Weight : 4 540 g and 4 810 g
