A 3 1/2\" jewel red-gold poudré enameled vase made in Sèvres by Paul Milet (1870-1950), around 1895, with a fabulous purely Art Nouveau silver and bronze silvered mount (base ring).The mount is extremely finely chiseled (see details on pictures) with leaves, closing in front with a scarabeus, on the back with a chestnut leave. Enamel condition perfect, without chip or hair.Small chips within the base ring. A rare early Paul Milet green mark with \"Sevres\", Sèvres double L with lis within, around 1895.
Milet\'s works use often gilt metal mounts before WW1. Metal, then chromed, was still a little used until the 1930s and disappeared afterwards.The early Paul Milet green mark with \"Sèvres\" under double L has been authenticated by Mrs Florence Slitine, curator at the Sèvres National Museum, author of several books.This early mark was used by the young Paul Milet from 1890 as his father, Optat (1838-1911), was still alive, until he used among others the \"PM Sèvres\" mark after 1900 — at the time he got a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. It was later (1930) changed into \"PM Sèvres\".The vases and decoratives objects (boxes) made by Paul Milet during this Art Nouveau era can be considered as a transition between the famous (but too neglected) works of his father, who became several major awards (bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1867, silver medal in Anvers, 1885, gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889) and his later famous works of the 1920s, followed up by his son, Henri, until and after WW2.The Milets were a true dynasty. The uncle of Paul, Nicolas Ambroise, left his village in Normandy, well-known for its ceramics production since the medieval times, and joined the Sèvres Factory in 1852. Highly gifted, he was then director of the ovens and pastes. He called to Sèvres his youngest brother, (Félix-) Optat, father of Paul. Despite the fact he was employed byt the Sèvres factory, Optat opened his own workshop in Sèvres in 1866, where he employed up to fifty workers. His research on colors was celebrated and he worked with first rank artists and industrials : Clément Massier (Vallauris), Charles Field (Haviland) and most of the Art Nouveau ceramics great artists.The color of this vase reminds the rediscovery of the great flambé red \"flambés de Chine\" or \"sang de boeuf\" (oxblood) in 1885. A rare poudré enamel with brown gold accents.The new colors were best sellers at Optat\'s (and then Paul\'s) elegant shop of the 36 avenue de l\'Opéra in Paris.Paul Milet was a great artist (please check in museums or sales websites). His valuable works, especially before WW1, will remain an excellent investment.
