Fancy rarely seen 1770s P. Desvignes Georgian sterling silver pierced mote spoon:
$159.99

We are listing this very fancy very rarely seen decoratively pierced 1770s double monogrammed Georgian sterling silver mote spoon by the London silversmith Peter Desvignes. Mote spoons are one of the smaller, more decorative, and more rarely seen pieces of specialized silver used by the Georgian gentry - in this case, to remove the tea leaves from the teapot after brewing (when tea was an extremely rare and valuable commodity), and to clean out any debris in the spout with the spiked end. It is rather difficult to find a mote spoon with an identifiable maker\'s mark, due to their extremely thin handles (and even more uncommon to find a double monogrammed one like this spoon). This mote spoon is pierced in a very fancy decorative pattern, it is incised on the back of its bowl with an S over T S betrothal monogram and on the back of its handle drop (join) with an H over I M betrothal monogram, and it is marked on the back of its handle with a partially rubbed P*D maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1771 by London silversmith Peter Desvignes (see page 156 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The spoon is almost 5.5 inches long, weighs .3 ounces, it is very decoratively pierced and very nicely double monogrammed, and it is in very good repaired condition. There is a very slight crimp to one side of the bowl and a tiny repair to the piercing in the area between the two monograms (see the last two pictures). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the spoon has not been professionally polished). A very rarely seen and very decorative piece of double monogrammed Georgian silver.
