Bone Knife Spear Head Pond Inlet
Description : Here is a very different type of Inuit art or craft. It is a custom spear point which is made of bone (likely caribou) which in turn would attach to a pole (shaft). Hand made, it has a metal tip inserted with a rivet running through the bone and metal to hold everything together. A spear head on a shaft can be used in hunting seals, which are a common \"country food\" among Inuit in many communities. The blade on this one looks a bit short though. This piece of Inuit culture was created by Inuit artist Rhoda Nutarak of Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik) located on the top of Baffin Island, near the Eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage. At 72 degrees latitude north Pond Inlet is one of the most northernly Arctic communities in Canada, and has a population of about 1600 people.Has the Igloo tag of authenticity, with artist name, community. Dated 2008. Item number 5783.
