Handle & bowl: struck with a fully figural G.A.R. badge from the handle top downward and into the bowl. Reverse: back of badge. Carries only \"E.A. WHITNEY\" who copyrighted and sold this design & \"Sterling.\" Length: 5-3/4\" Weight: .79 troy oz. This spoon, though not made by Gorham, appears on page 354 of my book (see below). The G.A.R., founded in 1866 not long after the Civil War\'s end, thrived for many years. In 1890 it had a membership of 490,000. But it ceased to exist in 1956 when it\'s last surviving member passed away. One would think that with such a larger membership in the 1890s, this spoon would have found many customers. Oddly, it is rarely seen today. (sale is for the spoon only.)
