FINE CHINESE CARVED BRISE FAN

A superbly carved fan that dates from theend of the 18th Century. It was made purely for export to theWest.

Theguardsticks are finely carvedinrelief with flowers, birdsanda single small cartouche.The rest of the fan is profusely carved onone side onlywithsimilar most intricate landscape detail. The main leaf has two oval medallions to the side with Chinese phoenix - the mythical king of all birds, with the head of a peacock, body of a swan and wings of a golden cockerel, they are believed to be messengers of happiness and believed to only appear during times of peace and prosperity.There is alsoa central medallionwith carved landscape scenes with pagodas and boats etc.

Above the ribbon are furtherintricate floral carvings.

This largefan measures 7.75 inches long .

Condition: Amazingconditionconsidering its age of over 220 years. There is someminor loss to a few background strands.The ribbon is very fragile and could do with replacing.
