  • The problem of getting the mail to distant locations in its empire was one which continually plagued Great Britain. Even the fastest of the Clipper sailing ships could not carry much cargo, so when the large capacity steamships were developed, they were quickly adopted by many shipping companies to carry the mail. One of the first steamship companies was the Royal Mail Line -- a company that remains one of Britain\'s great shipping lines even today. The Royal Mail Line was originally formed to carry the mails to the West Indies and was incorporated by charter in 1839 as the Royal Mail Steam Pack (R.M.S.P.) Company. It began mail service to the West Indies in 1842 with a fleet of steamships such as the R.M.S.P. Tagus depicted in this artwork. The Tagus was built by the famous shipbuilding company of Robert Napier Sons & Company of Glasgow, Scotland. The steamship was 410 feet long, had a gross tonnage of over 5500 tons and a top speed of fifteen knots. In 1900, Tagus was chartered by the British Government to transport troops and munitions to the South African War. After the war, the Tagus was used to return troops to Australia and New Zealand. She was also used extensively during World War I as a hospital ship. The R.M.S.P. Tagus was sold in 1920 to a company in Barcelona and was renamed \"Principe de Viana.\" She served the Spanish company well until breaking up in 1926.
