Fine Huge Venus with Nymphs and Cupid, 17th Century
Fine huge 17th century Venus with Nymphs and Cupid, oil on canvas. Superb 17th century derivation based on Albani’s original design of the goddess Venus as she reclines and is attended by a multitude of figures. The group are depicted in a parkland setting, beside an elaborate fountain, and before a palace / stately architecture. The goddess is presented a mirror by Cupid, whilst a female figure tends to her hair, others dote on her in various ways. Three putto in the left margin focus on their task – one by arranging flowers in a vase, one with a book, and a third taking pearls from a trunk.
The work is a 17th century derivation based on Albani\'s original design, of which there are two main versions known. The first was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese to decorate the Villa Borghese in Rome. The second, which is closest in composition to the present picture, was commissioned in 1621 by Ferdinando Gonzaga for the Villa Favorita in Mantua (see C. Puglisi, Francesco Albani, New Haven & London 1999) and later acquired for the Collection of Louis XIV in 1684.
Other variants in which the central group of figures is the same as in the present work are in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (Puglisi, op. cit., cat. nos. 71.ii and 84, reproduced plates 162 and 188 respectively) and painted in 1633.
The work has been carried out to a large scale and is a wonderful example from the period. Presented in a beautiful carved frame.The canvas is in very good condition particularly for its size and age. Minor losses and strengthening to the peripherals, relined circa 100+ yrs ago, stretcher possibly the original.
*The canvas will be removed and wrapped separately from the frame for safer transport.
