Fine large late 17th early 18th century portrait of a gentleman, oil on canvas. Fine bust length portrait of a gentleman wearing a brown cloak, white neckerchief, and long hair. Interesting and high quality portrait of a wealthy sitter from the upper echelons of society. The overall style, pose and treatment allude to the principal painter to King James ii, Francois de Troy (1645-1730) and it is this circle that the artist of the present work would have moved within. Francois de Troy had many other wealthy patrons such as Maria Anna of Bavaria, Madame de Montespan and her son by the king, Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, Duke of Maine, and his wife Anne-Louise-Bénédicte de Bourbon-Conde. It is therefore in all probability that the sitter is a titled noble court member.
A very fine example and housed in a beautiful 17th 18th century gilt carved and gesso frame, possibly the original.
Excellent care has been given over its circa 300 year lifetime. Relined, minor marks to the background.

François de Troy (1645 Toulouse - Paris 1730) had an outstanding ability with portraiture. So much that he was able to work continuously in court circles for almost fifty years capturing the upper classes and their preoccupation with manners and fashion. Interestingly it was said that he could make any woman look beautiful in his paintings, which amusingly made him sought after by all women.
