Large Fine Portrait of a Lady, 17th Century English
Large fine 17th century portrait of a Lady, oil on canvas. Fine large 17th century half-length portrait of a lady wearing curls in her hair, silver dress with blue mantle wrap, and pearl jewellery. The sitter identified as Elizabeth Jennings (c. 1630 – 1 April 1712) as per inscription on verso. The overall style, pose, and treatment typical of the English 17th century studios and clearly influenced by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680). The pièce de résistance is the treatment of the face where the handling is sophisticated and utterly exemplary. The artist is from Lely’s circle evident in many ways such as the handling, rendering, style, and the modelling with the almond eyes and soft complexion, plus the social status of the sitter indicates she would have had access to a leading artist. Beautifully presented in a carved frame.
Old inscription on verso: “Elizabeth dau. of Jonathan Jennings of Ripon, married 1st Christopher Hodgson of Newhall and 2ndly Henry Watkinson L.L.D., Chancellor of York 1664”. Elizabeth Jennings. Her father was Jonathan Jennings (?-1649) and her mother was Elizabeth Parker (daughter of Giles Parker of Newby Yorkshire). She had two brothers, Edmund Jennings (1626-1695) who emigrated to Virginia in 1680 and became Attorney General of Virginia, and Jonathan Jennings who was High Sherriff of Yorkshire in 1690, MP for Ripon in 1658-60, and a JP from 1688-95.
Considering its circa 350 years of age very good condition. Lined in the 19th century, minor touching, a cleaning would have taken place at some point. There is a fine craquelure. Good quality stretcher. Can be hung and enjoyed immediately.
