Large Portrait of a Lady, 18th century French
Fine large 18th century French portrait of a lady, oil on canvas. Portrait of a lady depicted wearing a black cap and veil with a gold-colour gown and mantle tied with jewelled clasp, by an artist following the work of French master Hyacinthe Rigaud. This is evident in the style, pose, colour, and modelling – Rigaud often used an elaborate flowing mantle. The expensive silks indicate wealth of the sitter and this is something the further highlighted by revealing the intricate gold pattern on the underside of the mantle.
This portrait is very large, much larger than appears in the photos and is held in a solid heavy antique gilt frame. Very good condition, good quality stretcher (appears original), relined 100+ yrs ago.

Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) was a French baroque painter of Catalan origin whose career was based in Paris. He was born in Perpignan, was trained by Antoine Ranc, and arrived in Paris in 1681 where he was received into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1700. His paintings capture exact likenesses along with the subject\'s costumes are therefore considered precise records of contemporary fashions. One of the most important portrait painters during the reign of King Louis XIV – he portrayed four generations of the Bourbons. His oeuvre includes members from the very top of French society from 1680 to 1740, plus several European monarchs, nobility, and members of their courts.
