This is a first edition copy of George W. Melville\'s fascinating book In The Lena Delta: A Narrative of the Search for Lieut.-Commander DeLong and His Companions. Melville describes a U.S. Navy exploration of the Arctic Ocean that began in July 1879. The expedition\'s ship became trapped in the ice, an experience only a few crew members survived. The book is thoroughly illustrated with drawings and maps. Although it has obviously been read, the pages are tight and have no damage such as annotation or dog ears. The cover boards do have shelf wear, but overall this is a really nice copy of the book. This copy was one of the first three thousand printed.
