Cold-water Goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Family:

Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps)

Order:

Cypriniformes (carps)

Class:

Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes)

The Goldfish is a robust, medium-sized cyprinid that generally reaches 15-20 cm TL and weighs 100-300 g. Maximum size is about 59 cm TL and 3 kg . The lateral line is complete, typically with 26-33 scales (range 25-36). The mouth is terminal, slightly oblique, and lacks barbels. The dorsal fin is long with iii-iv (13-19) rays, and a stout, spine-like ray precedes the branched rays. The anal fin has ii-iii (5-6) rays. The caudal fin is deeply emarginate and the belly lacks a keel. Pharyngeal teeth are in one row (0,4-4,0) and are somewhat molarlike, but narrow and smooth edged, without extensive grinding surfaces. Gill rakers on the first arch number 37-53. The peritoneum is blackish. Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced. Wild Goldfish are typically olive-green, gray, or silver; ornamental forms exhibit a range of colors. Breeding males may develop small nuptial tubercles on the operculum, dorsum, and pectoral fin rays. These structures are white and small; often giving the false impression the fish is infected with the disease “ich.” .

The goldfish, Carassius auratus, was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is still one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish and water gardens. A relatively small member of the carp family, the goldfish is a domesticated version of a dark-gray/brown carp native to East Asia. It was first domesticated in China[1] and introduced to Europe in the late 17th century.

Goldfish may grow to a maximum length of 23 inches (59cm) and a maximum weight of 9.9pounds (4.5kg), although this is rare; few goldfish reach even half this size. In optimal conditions, goldfish may live more than 20 years, but most household goldfish generally live only six to eight years, due to being kept in bowls. A group of goldfish is known as a troubling.
