Hardbound inFine condition with Slipcase, unpaginated but about 40 pages, includes a lengthy FOREWORD and List of ILLUSTRATIONS, measures approximately 9\" x 11 ½\", 30 tipped in illustrations.
The Slipcase features the \"Red Ginger\" on the front of paper covered boards. Modest wear is noted to the corners and edges and it hashad a some reinforcement of the spine edges with a tissue type product, possibly archival as no age toningor burn is noted from the tape. There is a worn through spot on the front free edge (visible in our photo.)Overall, it is rare to seeone of the Slipcases still present with this book particularly one still in nice condition. The boards are covered in a teal colored linen fabric with gold titling on the spine and a pasted on label to the front cover with embossed gold printing.. They are free of any significant wear, age toning, fading, splaying or bumps. The interior reveals the contents to be clean, firmly bound throughout with hinges completely intact. The pages are heavy, natural colored stock with an uncut vertical edge. Age toning is notedto the parameters of the end pagesand a bit of glue burn in thelower front gutter secondary to binding glues. Otherwise age toning is modest; that which would be expected in a publication of this age. All 30 prints are present still tipped in and in flawless condition. There are no previous owner names or notations, and no marks, creases or tears.
(Excerpts from Mrs. Dillingham\'s Seven Page Introduction)\"FOREWARD\" \"I am trying to look through the dust-blinded eyes of my young grandmother when her six months\' wedding sea voyage around Cape Horn edged at a dry trackless shore on Oahu, the village Honolulu crowded with brown grass huts. I hope she lifted up her eyes unto the hills where even in summer there was the cool dark shade of Koa and the green restfulness of kukui trees§the light of the tropic world. Little did the tall girl dream that even in her lifetime the barren wilderness would begin to blossom, that reservoirs would arrest and hold the runaway streams to nurture trees, grass andflowerstransplanted like herself from other parts of God\'s earth.\"

\"In the pages that follow we are welcomed to a floral pageant, to a symphony of matchless color, OLIVE GALE MCLEAN with rare insight, notable clarity and precision lays before us these transplanted alienflowers§aliens who have found in our sympathetic land a new heritage of strength, character and fruition§and whose triumphant fulfillment is as indigenous toHawaiias those majestic mountains and languorous beaches that so long ago bade gracious welcome to the first malihini. § Mary Dillingham Frear

As follows are 30 individual floral plates, each hand tipped on the recto with corresponding write-up on the Verso. I.e. each is printed on a separate sheet that is tipped in (glued only at the top) to the page on the right. On the page opposite is a write-up on theflowerincluding where to go to see this flower growing. As explained in the Forward, these are not theindigenous flowersofHawaiiand it is amazing how many different places they actually came from. In the 1800s when members of theHawaiianmonarchy started circulating in society, touring foreign places and also hosting foreign dignitaries, often a gift was made to them of some very special botanical specimen. These specimens were nurtured and propagated and significantly contributed toHawaii\'s diverse floral splendor. The majority of theseFLOWERSOFHAWAIIbooks are quite worn and often in poor internal condition. This particular \"First Edition\"FLOWERSOFHAWAII, still presenting in its original Slipcase is truly a rare fine and would make a prize addition to a Hawaiiana collection.
