Glass artist Francis X. Weinman (1865-1958) is recognized as one of the earliest studio paperweight button makers. Having started producing them in 1940-1941 at the age of 76. He made them for the fledgling button collector market. This one is one of his typical flattened top shaped buttons. It has an opaque white glass base or set-up sprinkled liberally with goldstone; all covered with a sparkling clear glass top. While most of his shanks were of iron and attract a magnet he did make shanks of brass at times. His shanks are usually swirled into the glass ; however some are found with very little swirling. This one has a shank of brass that has been swirled into the glass. It measures 11/16ths inch in diameter and 5/16ths inch top to bottom excluding the shank. It is in very fine condition. Weinman was a very prolific artist. His simple glass bases sprinkled with goldstone are readily available making them affordable to the collector.
