French Model 1874 \"Gras\" Sword Bayonet Mre d\' Armes de St. Etienne Juillet 1876.

Keep in mind this is 140 years old and is in better condition than its original owner. Many have been lost to time, conflict, and the Iron & Steel furnaces. This is one of those relics of history that has seen more parts of the world than any of us could hope to visit. Overall it is solid, and very much intact The cosmetic appearance suggest this has done a lot of travelling. These are relics of history that as collectors we do not \"own\", we aremerelycaretakers until it is time for someone else to hold onto for awhile.

Manufacturer: Mre d\' Armes de St. Etienne.

Model: French Model 1874 \"Gras\" Sword Bayonet.

Serial Number: 67770. The \"6\" could be argued as the area with the serial number is pitted, but the numbers are visible for the \"7770\" portion.

Overall Length: 25½ ”

Grip; Brass Pommel, wood handle, Nickel finish, all but gone in protected areas.

Blade: Patina on Steel.

This bayonet was the last of the French \"sword-type\" bayonets. It was manufactured to fit the French Model 1874 \"Gras\" Infantry Rifle. The \"Gras\" was manufactured from 1874 to about 1885. This one is clearly dated 1876 on back of blade. This bayonet has a solid brass pommel with integral latching mechanism (push-button/spring-steel). Grips are wood. Cross guard is steel, with upper guard being the muzzle-ring, lower guard forming a hooked \"blade-breaker\" quillon. Blade is steel - well made - and triangular or \"T\" (3-edge) in form (very sturdy as a thrusting weapon). The blade is marked on the back-edge (opposite the bottom cutting edge) with the arsenal, month, and year of manufacture; this is done in engraved cursive fashion and appears, \"Mre d\' Armes de St. Etienne Juillet 1876\".
