229th Aviation Battalion - Assault Helicopter

Arriving in Vietnam in September 1965 with the bulk of the 1st Cavalry Division, the 229th was part of the 11th Aviation Group of the 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile (Helicopter Insertion).

With the departure of the 11th Avaiation Group, the 229th battalion with a strength of approximately 600 operatives remained in-country serving remaining elements of the 1st Cavalry Divison out of Bien Hoa (North of Saigon) incorporating the unofficial Troop H, 16th Cavalry (later to renamed Troop F, 9th Cavalry).

They departed Vietnam in August 1972.

The unit was deactivated on the 23rd of February 1973 - It had an enormous attrition rate whilst in Vietnam (it\'s entire service) losing 58 aircraft.

During it\'s service in Vietnam the unit was heavily involved in two of the largest single battles of the war, Duc Co and Plei Me ( precursor to the battle of Ia Drang Valley).
