Jatim beads were formed by applying thin layers of patterned millefiore canesegments over cores of single-color glass. These cored millefiori beads are found inonly in a small region of East Java, usually in megalithic graves. The name was coined by Jamey Allen, noted authority on Southeast Asian beads, as a contraction for \"Jawa Timur,\" which means East Java.Theyare often mistakenly called “Majapahit beads,” a trade name first applied byIndonesian antique bead dealers. However, according to the archaeological record, theMajapahit Kingdom of East Java didn’t exist until centuries after the creationof Jatim beads.
