PICKETT - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/10/1864 - HFSID 283739GEORGE PICKETTSigned handwritten letter (July 10, 1864) to his wife Sallie hoping for a brief rendezvous but adding that he has not yet heard from General Robert E. LeeAutograph Letter signed: "Your George" in pencil, 2 pages (front and verso), 8 x 10. No place, "Sunday, 3½ P. M, July 10 [1864]. To his wife LaSalle ("Sallie") Corbell Pickett. In part: "I have this moment returned from a ride out along the lines. And truly a warm one it was my darling wife. Captain Stuart is sending in his boy by the train so that you will get this sooner than should I dispatch a courier. I have but a moment my baby to write, but must make the boy wait till I can tell my Sallie that her husband is so anxious to see her, to kiss her … Your husband will try to steal in Tuesday but do not look certainly, for many things, in fact anything, might prevent me. Should your George come, he will not be in before 9 o\'clock, probably later, and would have to start back by early in the morning. But to see his own good wife, he would risk a little of his reputation, and ride over the whole country yet and everything else. I sent sister\'s first letter, but as yet have heard nothing from Genl. Lee - can\'t say why. If I do not get some intimation of its being attended to within the next two days I shall make Blain put in an application for bond on the necessities of the case and will endorse accordingly. Something must be done and that speedily! Wallace Jackson\'s A. D. C. [aide de camp] and not at hand until 9 o\'clock this morning. I was in an agony of anxiety. What in the world does my Baby want with Ipecac? I thought she had been sick enough at the stomach. But she shall have it - or anything else she wants if she will only promise her George soon to be better. … My pet. God bless you! I am so sorry I cannot send you any berries today. Love to my ever friend. Your George". The military career of Confederate general George Edward Pickett (1825-1875) started auspiciously enough. He graduated from West Point in 1846 at the bottom of his class of 59 men. Pickett went on to lead admirably in the Mexican-American War and gained fame as the first American soldier to reach the top of wall of Chapultepec Castle during the Battle of Chapultepec (September 12 to 13, 1847). He also briefly crossed paths with future Union general Winfield Scott Hancock, challenging him to a duel. Luckily for both, duels had become scarcer and scarcer and Hancock declined the duel. Pickett is best known for Pickett\'s Charge, a disastrous assault on General George Meade\'s positions along Cemetery Ridge at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. While Pickett is not responsible for the planning of the offensive, he was one of three generals who led it. Generals J. Johnston Pettigrew and Isaac R. Trimble led the central and left charges, while Pickett led one to the right. Over 12,000 Confederate soldiers took part in Pickett\'s Charge and half of them were wounded or killed. This strategic error is considered one of the nails in the coffin for the Confederate Army, depleting morale and significantly reducing the Army\'s population. He was later defeated at the Battle of Five Forks (April 1, 1865), which culminated in General Robert E. Lee\'s surrender eight days later. Pickett, twice a widower, married teen-ager LaSalle "Sallie" Corbell on November 13, 1863. Sallie, who outlived her husband by 56 years, was a staunch defender of his military reputation, writing and speaking frequently on his behalf until her death in 1931.  Soiled and worn. Horizontal and vertical folds with one affecting signature. Cello tape residue. Edges worn and chipped. Otherwise, fine condition.
