From a great old Tucson estate some years ago and a charismatic terminal 18th or possibly very early 19th Century token of affection is this Georgian Period Bilston Battersea enameled trinket /patch box showing a sweetheart motto to the lid and a mirror inside. While the box shows some obvious and actually common condition issues, it is absolutely of the period. The hand accomplished motto is delightfully worthy of inclusion in a Jane Austin novel - any one of the Bennett sisters would cherish this. \"The Mifer ope\'s / His Trunk of Gold / His Bags falute his Eyes / Open this Box dear Maid behold / What I far better prize.\" Keep in mind the Georgian penchant for \"f\"\'s as \"s\"\'s. Condition is quite fair for the damage prone nature of the genre, with a genuine aura of time to all surfaces. Both lid and body exterior show typical old hairlines and some enamel chips and cracks. That said, there are no dents and the box is intact. The mirror has an ancient crack, having otherwise survived where many others have not. The hinge still works as should should - the small thumb piece on the lid apparently succumbed in antiquity. There are otherwise usual and expected signs of period service to exterior, here simply more evidence of the real thing. That said and for a collection of such boxes and the collector who knows, this has merit. A look at those pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size is about 1 11/16 in. long and 1 3/8 in. front to back. About 1 in. high. If you seek out such romantic Georgian trifles or have an affinity for anything relating to love in the long ago, or simply understand what the maid beheld when she opened the box, this will have great meaning for you.
