We are proud to offer a very nice circa 1930-40\'s original oil painting depicting a sublime bluebonnet field. When we first saw this piece at a recent estate sale, it immediately reminded us of similar unsigned pieces by Robert Wood which we\'ve dealt in the past (he famously seldom signed early pieces which he created on-the-spot at the Joske\'s department store window in downtown San Antonio).
From a 1997 Texas Monthly article citing the phenomenon:
\"Although the elitists in the Texas art world quickly lamented the bluebonnet genre—before Onderdonk died in 1922 at the age of forty, he openly regrettedhis public reputation as a bluebonnet painter—ordinary Texans were thrilled by the paintings. “It became a tradition in San Antonio for people to buy little bluebonnet paintings and give them as wedding gifts,” Steinfeldt says. One of the state’s most famous post-Onderdonk bluebonnet artists was Robert Wood, who moved from England to the Hill Country in 1932. He would do his paintings, start to finish, inside a window of Joske’s department store in downtown San Antonio and sell them on the spot. He quickly got bored with bluebonnets, but sales were so good that he hired a young, self-trained painter named Porfirio Salinas to add the bluebonnets after he had done the landscape portion of a painting, paying Salinas $5 for every canvas he completed.\"
We strongly suspect that this is one of those paintings. Adding to the provenance, we removed cardboard backing from the frame which revealed a very telling inscription by the person who originally received it as a wedding gift--Bob\'s girl friend for a time and my friend.\"
We searched online records and there was indeed a Ludia Lorenz, originally from Kingsbury, who resided in San Antonio at the time of this painting. \"Bob\" is, of course, the artist.
The painting is in good vintage condition. Oil on board with slight wear as indicated in the images. Frame appears to be original to the period and is in good condition and ready to hang.
Painting is 8 x 10 inches view and 12 x 14 overall with frame.
Please note that we always honor a 14 day review period; buyer is only responsible for return shipping and the item must be received in the same condition as sent.
