Tamata are votive offerings or promises made to God or his Saints. Most of them are rectangular pieces of metal with miniature body parts etched on them. They are made of tin, copper, silver or gold. When a loved one is ailing, Greeks, ancient and modern, offer tamata (the word is plural for "tama", which is loosely translated as "votive" or "oblation").

Modern Greeks take the tama to the church of their choice and tie it with a ribbon to a horizontal pole under the icon or painting of their chosen Saint, of the Mother of God or of Christ himself. Tamata have holes at one end for this very purpose.

Tamata are symbols of the miracle of healing which is hoped to occur, or has already occurred. They are proofs of faith, so they are an integral part of the miracle. They work as a bridge between the person in need and a saved person (a Saint, or "Hagios").

Tamata made of clay have been found at ancient Greek healing centers and temples, such as the Prepalatial religious sites of Crete, dating from the Bronze Age (around 3,000 BC). They have also been found at 8th century BC sites, such as at Amphiarion where the majority was still made of pottery and wood, with a few made of metal.

One tama is a modern Greek folk art work, unique or in multiples. The manufacturing of those votives requires important handwork because of the special characteristics of their treatment and despite the swift progress of goldsmith and its instruments.

We don t have a clear view about the historical quality and variety of the Tamata, because, when in need, churches used to melt them down and sell them. But, from the private collections that are formed in Greece those last few decades, we can conclude that this is one more quiet form of greek folk art which gave great, unique and beautiful artifacts.
