Welcome to the world ofnative Gold Quartz. For those unfamiliar with this product,GQ is, essentially, gold ore...very high-grade gold orebornin the outercrust ofthe earth. When geologicalconditions are just right, metallic gold-crystals form (grow)inside quartz veins or other rock formations. As extremely hot, hydrothermal, silica and metal-bearing solutions (waters)cool, an orderly, mineral-precipitatingsequence occurs. It was once thought that most precious metals deposits formed beneath the ocean, but it has been discovered that geothermal hot springs above modern-day sea levelsproduce ore bodies of enormous stature. Vein filling comprised of gold ore whichretains thehost matrix rock (gangue)and harbors metalliferous gold can become one of the earth\'s more highly-prized gemstones. Most gold quartzcomes from what is known as a lode deposit, hence the nickname,MOTHER LODE, for the long alignment of U.S.hard-rock gold deposits stretching northwest to southeast in the SierraNevada Mountains of California.
Theideal criteria jewelers and lapidarieslook for in Gold Quartzare hardness, interesting matrixvariations, and richness. Matrix colors foundin gold quartzmay differ significantlyfrom oneore deposit tothe next. The gemstone offered here is just oneexample of thecountless variationsof GQto be found in nature.Themetallic mineral, gold, occurs ina variety ofgeological formations. In modern-day, U.S.miningoperations, entire mountains are blasted apart, hauled off, piledinto heaps, thensoaked withcyanide toleach the precious metal from the ore. At one time, prospectors whofoundveins outcroppingatthe earth\'ssurfaceoften staked a claim or claims at the point of discovery. Thisinitial phase of a mine\'s lifeoccurredwhenore containedinside these veinsindicated by their richness, or through fire assays, the presence of a quantifiable amount of gold per ton. These old prospectors, encouraged by their tests, might then sink vertical shafts down into the earth chasing the vein.Atsome point, if they were not already recognized as such, they became hard-rock miners. If aveindid not trend straight downward, but extended in a different direction, miners would excavate tunnels in an attempt to follow horizontal or pitching leads intothe mountainsides. In these instances, their first inkling of goldlodeswereeitherthese discoveries of quartz veins or the existence of regionalplacer deposits.Since not all fissure-type gold veins will be exposed at the surface, mine development work (assessment work) mightbeto sink a shaft in hopes ofencountering an \'inferred vein\' at some unknown, hiddenpointwithin the earth\'s outermost extremities.
Quartz veinswere, at one time, notoriouslyfamous producers of gold, but many of these prominent, fissure-type veins, such as the HomestakeMine in SouthDakota, have been mined to great depths. Since oretenor and underground geology oftenchange at indeterminate intervals, deep depositscan unexpectedlybecome unprofitable to mine. That is not to say that mining at extreme depths spells the end forunderground mines. Witness the incredibly deepdeposits of South Africa. As always, prevailinggeology of the immediate environs is a major determining factor. Water seepageoftenposed a seriousproblem in many of the historic old mines of the westernU.S.Discontinuous veins sometimesslip sideways alongfault zones. When relocating a lost lead became too costly, mines often closed. In terms of geological age, these slippagesare rarely recentoccurrences. Another cause for mines to close isa dramatic fluctuation in the price for metals.A great many factors influence the availability, production, and profitabilityof mininggold quartz. GQ appears to be extremely scarce at this time since onlya scant handful ofmines around the world are producing this rare gemstone material. Thanks forchecking out our digs. Gold ofEldorado8-19-10
