Very early crystal wireless set receiver,datingto the pre-broadcast era before the introduction of radio broadcasting, 1919 -1922. The \"Venus\" by the Radiophone Company. Stamped \"Gamages, Holborn.\" The Gamages Department Store was a pioneer in the retailing of wireless apparatus from captive, private manufacturers to \"amateurs\" in theyears immediately after the Great War and in the days when radio receivers were regarded as \"scientific instruments\". Designed for the reception of spark transmissions from ships at sea and Morse codetime signals by listeners at home, in the days before broadcasting. A particularly rare, possibly unique,example an early domestic wirelessradioreceiver.
Mahogany cabinet measuring approximately9 x7 x7inches.Brass fittings,tapped inductance type tuning.Unusual open cats whisker galena crystal detector.Terminals for headphones.Instructions in lid in very good condition. Looks to be all complete, but it is untested and it istherefore sold as a collector\'s display item.
