1860s CDV photo and partial manuscript of Edward Canby (1817 - 1873), a career United States Army officer and Union general in the Civil War. In 1861-2, Canby commanded the Department of New Mexico, defeating the Confederate General Henry Hopkins Sibley at the Battle of Glorieta Pass, forcing him to retreat to Texas. At the war\'s end, he took the surrender of Generals Richard Taylor and Edmund Kirby Smith. As commander of the Pacific Northwest in 1873, he was assassinated during peace talks with the Modoc, who were refusing to move from their California homelands. He was the only United States general to be killed during the Indian wars. CDV was published by E. & H.T. Anthony out of New York City. The circa 1861 unsigned manuscript is in Canby\'s hand and appears to read, \"The payments made by order of the Commander of the Department of New Mexico, under the Authority of par. 52 of the instructions from the War Department of June 12th, 1848, to the mounted volunteers serving in New Mexico, for forage not issued in kind will be allowed (?) paper to the credit of these officers making the payments.
