I bought this years ago from a dealer of WWII items. It came in its original brown paper envelope as issued by the US Army, but now I can\'t find that darn envelope. (Hate when that happens.)
The chain has two parts, which each are intended to hold one dog tag. This serves two purposes. One is that it keeps the tags from making noise as they clank together (which would be dangerous in war), and the other is that it allows the smaller chain to be removed from a dead soldier so that his tag can be sent to HQ, while leaving one tag on the longer chain so that the body can still be identified.
