George Dumont Otis. 1879-1962. Major California Impressionist.
Born in Memphis, Mr. Otis had studios in the Midwest, and in California. He spent most of his career in California studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then studied at numerousprestigious schools, in Pennsylvania, New York and the National Academy of design. He took lessons from William Merritt Chase, and Robert Henri, among others.
He moved to LosAngeles in 1919 andbecame enamored with the beauty and light of the state.
Mr.Otis was a capable man, and played professional baseball for a couple of years, and was hired by Louis Mayer of MGM to paint sets. He moved to San Francisco in 1934. He had a social life with the luminaries of the period, such as John Steinbeck and.Jack London. He opened a studios in Kentfield in Marin County and many of his students became professionartists.
This painting measures 20 by 24 inches, sight. With an appropriate impressionist frame, it is 27 by 31 inches. It is signed front and back by Otis, and titled \"Woodland Brooke.\" It oil on original canvas. Thecanvas is a bit loose in it it\'s stretchers, and there are some mildscattered areas of dots of paint missing. The partingis ready to hang as is and considering it\'s age and untouched status, is in good condition.
