Offered here for your consideration is an ORIGINALGerman Belt Buckle worn by WW1 Veterans serving in a Freikorps volunteer unit, ca. 1920s or early 1930s. These so-called Werwolf (aka Wehrwolf and Wehrbund) volunteers served at the behest of the democratic Weimar German government, in order to prevent widespread Revolution and Bolshevik insurrection ... a time of severe inflation and universal political and paramilitary unrest.
Most such belt buckles were manufactured in brass. This example is a rarely seen steel version presumably made at the height of the Great Depression when steel was a less expensive material. There is a barely discernible mold flaw, a fine thin line apparent on the surface of the inset that was likely caused late in the production life cycle of the factory mold. Because this buckle was made at the height of the Depression, at a time when \"nothing was thrown away,\" it survived the years ofRevolution, and was later brought back by an American GI as the Allies swept across Europe.
