Rear flap undamaged (save for two small 1/8th of an inch tears at top right and top left extreme corner (mentioned for detailed accuracy only)). The rear flap is unsealed with original gum. The reverse is pristine.

Glen Allen Star precancels were used by only one business mailer--Cussons, May and Sheppard--a large printing house located in western Henrico County, Virginia were created in the late 1870s and 1880s.

This isan envelope that travelled postally; The very small post office was overwhelmed by the volume of bulk mail that the printing house was bringing each day. To save time, the firm printed the cancellation on the envelopes using a printing press and delivered them to the post office already cancelled. In theory, all printing on the obverse, including a the circular datestamp was printed at the same time the star was printed on the manually-affixed stamp. It is theorized that small batches of mailwere prepared each day. Varieties are known involving the placement of the position of the star.

Though there was no official regulation from Washington authorizing the local postmaster to accept them, the postmaster saved having to cancel the envelopes by hand, since the company had already done so using its printing press. Only the mail from the business was prepared this way. Other Glen Allen, Virginia mail was not cancelled this way.
