A fabulous and unusual antique Victorian Etruscan hand engraved silver plate hinged picture-holding locket on a book chain necklace, dating to circa 1880.

This stunning silver plate (the pendant is unmarked so I am selling it as silver plate) locket is of exceptional quality and design. The locket has been designed in the Etruscan style with a stunning scrolling floral design made up of different layers of applied silver plaques which raise it high off the locket. These plaques are surrounded by a silver bead-work and indented squares frame. The reverse has been exquisitely and deeply carved with floral entwining scrolls which also creates a lovely raised design inside the locket. The locket opens on a large hinge to reveal two places for pictures. The book chain is a fantastic checkered design with stamped cross-hatchings alternating between plain squares. It is attached to the locket with a lovely arrow-shaped bail with a large solid ring attacked and has a push-through snap-over clasp.

The pendant measures approximately 3 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches (83mm x 38mm) including the bail. The locket by itself measures about 2 1/8 x 1 1/2 inches (54mm x 38mm) including the attachment ring. The locket is about 17mm (11/16 inch) thick. The chain measures around 17 3/4 inches (451mm) in total length and is about 1/3 inch (9mm) wide. The locket holds two oval pictures measuring around 32mm x 23mm (1 1/4 x 7/8 inch). The total weight is approximately 81 grams.

The locket and chain are in excellent condition with no damage, dings, dents or repairs and only extremely minor wear. The locket snaps shut securely leaving just a tiny crack. The hinge is strong and works well. The chain and clasp are all in excellent condition. The picture fixing rings are both present and house two pieces of acrylic. The necklace has a beautiful old patina to the silver.
