Onyx

is a semi-precious form of chalcedonywhich has alternating straight bands of color, most commonly brown, red, white, and black. Chalcedony is the group name for a large family of stones, all ofwhich form from silicondioxide, also known as quartz. In order to be classed as chalcedony, a stone must be milky, and translucent totransparent, often with layers or bands of color. The color of onyx, as with other forms of chalcedony, iscreated through impurities which seep into the rock as it forms.

Marble

Marble is a rock widely used inbuildings, monuments, and sculptures. It consists chiefly of calcite ordolomite, or a combination of these carbonate minerals. Marble is a type ofmetamorphic rock formed from limestone. Marble is found in many countries, including Belgium, France, Great Britain, Greece, India, Italy, and Spain. Marble is formed from limestone by heat and pressure in the earth\'s crust. These forces cause the limestone to change in texture and makeup. This processis called recrystallization. Fossilized materials in the limestone, along withits original carbonate minerals, recrystallise and form large, coarse grains ofcalcite. Impurities present in the limestone during recrystallization affectthe mineral composition of the marble that forms. The minerals that result fromimpurities give marble wide variety of colours. The purest calcite marble iswhite. Marble containing hematite has a reddish colour. Marble that haslimonite is yellow, and marble with serpentine is green.
