A good German viola bearing the label “TON-KLAR / The David / made in GERMANY expressly for / WILLIAM LEWIS AND SON / CHICAGO, ILLINOIS”. Not dated, but likely made in the mid-1970s .

The two-piece back is of maple of medium figure, the table is of spruce of narrow grain. The varnish is of a light red-brown on a golden base. Back length is 16” (407 mm) and the instrument weighs, without chin-rest, 686 grams.

This viola has come to us in pristine, original condition, without cracks or damage of any kind. Lewis\' catalog description of The David reads: “Strad model – select aged and seasoned wood – golden, red-brown varnish.\"

They later add: “Now reliable and skilled makers produce these instruments which fit our requirements as to precisely correct measurements, workmanship, wood, varnish.”

At the time this viola was made, William Lewis and Son of Chicago was still a private corporation. Founded in 1874, it was the first exclusive string house in the midwest. The firm dealt in fine antique string instruments (Amati, Guarneri, and Stradivarius instruments were often in their inventory), and had a world famous repair shop. Many notable builders worked for Lewis, including Carl Becker, and players from symphonies the world over often visited the shop. The company also made it its goal to provide high quality new instruments for players of all levels. These instruments, made in Germany exclusively for Lewis, have always represented a great value for string players. This one is no exception.

Today, the brand is owned by Conn-Selmer, a division of Steinway Musical Instruments, and most of their instruments are made in South Korea or China. Modern instruments bearing the Lewis brand have little to nothing in common with the fine instruments once distributed by the firm.

As mentioned, this viola is in pristine, original condition. Highly recommended for the intermediate-to-advanced

The acquisition of an instrument can be a complicated and frustrating experience. We recommend that a buyer select two items of similar price and one additional that’s just a few dollars higher. We’re happy to send three instruments to you \"on approval\", to give you the best opportunity to find a soloist instrument that will give you decades of satisfaction.

Gary, Beryl and Jonathan Ray are the principals of a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA. In business since 1953, we’ve had the same owner since 1963.

It’s sometimes possible to buy a good instrument on for a lower price, but unless it has had proper set-up, you won’t know how it plays until you spend another several hundred to have it put in top condition. With a violin from OUR shop, you know it’s in the finest condition when it arrives at your home!

We maintain a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially \"free\" and part of our warranty for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our \"service after the sale\" promise and has been since 1953!

All invoices will reflect full sale value. We CANNOT provide a reduced value invoice, so please don’t ask!
