Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration.Gorham brought out Imperial Chrysanthemum in sterling in 1894. This pattern is also made as Chrysanthemum in EP (electroplate), as is the ladle offered here. The pattern is, as the name implies, mums in bud and bloom. This symmetrical arrangement is on the front of the handle. The back of the handle is also decorated with Chrysanthemum motifs, and the heels of the pieces are decorated with a mum in full bloom. Soup ladles came in a variety of sizes. They were used for serving both soup and other soup- like foods such as stew. The size is what distinguishes the ladles from one another. The true punch ladle is a special form, with a wide, deep, and narrow bowl with pour lips. The largest of the true soup ladles is called the soup , the next is the medium, then comes the oyster ladle, and the smallest is the bouillon. The punch ladle with separate pouring spouts seems to have been introduced in the 1880s, and most silverplate sets did not have them. Other types of ladle include the sauce ladle, the gravy ladle, the mustard, and the mayonnaise. Old sets of china have numerous tureens, all with specific functions, and the ladles were meant to go in them. Selecting a ladle for a tureen is not as easy as it sounds. The ladle must be much bigger than seems logical. This is so the ladle does not accidentally become drowned in the soup, which is both and embarrassment and sort of funny. There is no gracious way of bringing it back to the surface. Generally, the tureen sits in front of the host who ladles the soup into soup bowls or plates and passes them down the table. Passing a full tureen around is both heavy and awkward. Tureens and their ladles are wonderful for buffets and sideboards. The soup/bouillon ladle offered here measures about 10 1/2”. This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 110 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. The pattern is crisp and clear. This ladle has been carefully used and well cared for, and is in exceptional condition.I polish all silver before listing on . Please email with any questions before offerding.
