Gullah Sweetgrass Coiled Oval Fanner Basket Charleston Mt. Pleasant SC Pristine by Henry & Mary Foreman

What a work of art! Beautiful coiled oval basket in the fanner style. Approximate dimensions: 12.25\" length by 10.5\" wide by 3.25\". Basket interior diameter is about 11.5\" near the top. This would make a lovely present for the collector of artisan objects.

This basket comes with a document that indicates that the basket was handwoven by Henry & Mary Foreman and also provides information about the traditions and the crafting of sweetgrass baskets.

Coiled baskets are handwoven from one continuous strand of sweetgrass, bundles of bulrush and pine needlessewn together. Palmetto leaves are woven tightly around the coils of sweetgrass and provide the banding needed to join the continuous coil as it spirals. This one in particular is crafted with groups of pine needles and bulrush which provide some contrast, definition and strength throughout the basket. This item has such detailed design and expert craftsmanship that it is of museum quality.

Baskets similar tothis one are on display at the Smithsonian. Sweetgrass basket making is one of the very few American folk art media that still exists. Descendants of African slaves who worked the South Carolina rice plantations continue tofashionsweetgrass basketsby hand and sell them in the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, SC,markets and along the coastal highway. Asdevelopment encroaches, the availability of materials used -- bulrush, palmetto fronds, and the sweetgrass from the marshes--gradually disappears.Weaving a basket like this onecan take many days. Asthe older generations pass on, one wonders if younger generations will preserve these beautiful art forms and coastal traditions.
