Lovely HAGOITA GEISHA Hand Painted Vintage JAPANESE WOOD PADDLE With Many Layered Design SILK KIMONO

Hagoita is a wooden decorated paddle, this particular one is wonderful- very thick and sturdy and covered with hand painted padded cloth behind the Geishaand checkered cloth on the handle.

These are traditionally decorated for New Year holidays

This is a technique called \'Oshie\'- silk fabric is stuffed with cotton to create a flattened doll effect. Her face is completely hand painted and she has a gorgeous expression. Her head is supported by wooden dowels on the back side, so she actually is slightly dimensional and her head stands out a bit from the surfaceof the paddle.

Her hair is a traditional Geisha coiffure made of very fine silk threads molded into shape

In her hair, she wears many silver cloth flowers with red centers, sprays of paper wrapped fine wires, and has 2 hair ornaments of actual thin strips of silver metal which move and jingle freely. Amazing.

Her kimono is exquisite-over 20 separate pieces of multi patterned/ multi coloredembroidered silk [some with metallic thread] which are sewn and hand pinned together to look like a real kimono with drapes, folds, and a sash

Hanging from the kimono are 5different colored silk strips on each side [10 in total] and each ends in a real [working] brass jingle bell.

Back of wooden paddle has a beautiful hand painted design of 2 pink peony flowers with foliage.

Size Approx. 24\" Long x 9.5\" Across at widest point at top of paddle.

Geisha is about 17\" long

Very Good Condition

No soiling or damage to silk face, materials, painted designs, wood, fabric, etc..... the only reason I am not listing her as \'excellent\' [and she is in \'excellent\' shape] is thatshe has one of the center of her silver cloth hair flowers missing, difficult to notice because the base of the flower is undamaged and whole. Also has one TINY jingle bell missing from a silk strip, and one is slightly flattened on the end, hard to notice as there are 10 strips in total. These 2 tiny details are preventing me from listing her as \'excellent\' which she otherwise is.

Very light wear normal for vintage age to wooden back of paddle.

This is an extraordinary piece, fantastic for a collector or lover of Asian art- would look amazing on display.

I would estimate her age as circa 1960s.
