This wonderful Halcyon Days, egg shaped, enamel box is a Punch and Judy puppet show. Punch, based on the 16th century Italian commedia dell\'arte character Punchinello, made his first appearance in England on May 9, 1662. The original show was slapstick adult entertainment, and was violent and bawdy. In the late Victorian era, it evolved into children\'s entertainment, and some of the inappropriate characters were removed. The egg has a colorful tent top and bottom, of blue and green bands, red stripes, and yellow scallops and ribbons. On the side are three curtained scenes. In front are the main characters, Punch, his wife Judy, their baby, and Toby The Dog. The next scene has Punch, Joey The Clown, The Crocodile, and Toby. The last scene has Punch with The Constable, Pretty Polly (Punch\'s mistress in the adult version), The Ghost, The Henchman, and Toby. A string of sausages is a prop. Toby The Dog is seated on the very top of the egg, and curled up asleep on the very bottom.
