This is one of the most sought after antique potteries in the South of France, together with the rare pichet de barque ! This very old pottery (mid 1800) was first made in Canakkale, a small Turkish port, and would contain a local alcohol which was exported to Marseille and area. The pitchers were so unusual and beautiful that people kept them to use as water pitchers on their tables. Demoiselles d\'Avignon often went by two, one with a large pouring spout was called the Demoiselle, the other with a small pouring pipe was called the Damoiseau. Here, it seems that we have a Damoiseau !
This pottery comes from a private collection and carries a lovely dark brown glaze with iridescent glares on its bulbous body. At one time, it has been sadly broken and repaired very carefully, twice on the handle and once on the neck, see pictures, ask for more is needed.
The decor includes applied raised flowers and leaves and lots of small decorations near the opening. The pitcher being around 150 years old may have light wear, rubbing, crackles, small firing defects, all commensurate with its age, ask for more information before offerding if you are unsure.
