For sale is this large Herschede chiming mantel clock. It plays the Westminster chimes and has 5 rods. It plays 4 notes on the quarter hour, 8 notes on the half hour, 12 notes on the three-quarter hour, and 16 notes on the hour, followed by counting of the hours by striking the longest rod. There is a silence lever on the dial that controls the chimes on or off.
The movement is model 10, as noted on the back door instruction sheet. It has an 11 jewel balance wheel escapement and it runs, but is difficult to get started, so some kind of service may be required. Once started, it keeps running alright and the balance motion seems lively enough, but it loses about 5-6 minutes per day. The chimes and strike work okay. The serial number is 45333 and it’s marked on the back of the movement, and It was probably made sometime in the 1920’s or 1930’s (approximately). A key will be included.
The case is in good condition and the original finish is intact but is aged (and/or oxidized & dull).There are no cracks, chips, gouges, or missing trim. The clock is model 2011 and this is stamped into the bottom of the case. The back door is hinged and has the instruction label on the inside of the door. The case is approximately 17-3/4” H (to top of finial) x 10-1/2” W x 7” D.
The dial, hands, front door & hinges, and beveled glass are all in good condition.
