EXQUISITEANTIQUE JAPANESECARVED WOOD TEMPLE DRUM
EdoPeriod (1603 - 1868)Magnificent antique JapaneseMokugyowithsublime, deeply carveddecoration. Displaying traditional form, with two carp holding a wisdom pearl in their mouths on the ornate handle. The fish\'s wide-open eyesrepresent eternal wakeful attention and vigilance in devotion. The handsome rounded body of the instrument is lacquered in brilliant vermilion, further highlighted by vibrant gilt accents. The entire piece displays in magnificent fashion, drawing attention from all the way across the room.
Mokugyo are Buddhistpercussion instruments used during chanting mantras or reciting sutras in Mahayana, Pure Land, and Zen practice throughout Asia. The gong or drum, also known as the wooden fish, is usually laid on its side on a cushion and struck with a leather wrapped mallet. Because of the carefully honed and hollowed out form, it produces a deep, richtone. This outstanding mokugyo dates to the Edo Period, the age of the Shogun and Samurai, mid 1800s. Early examples such as this one are increasingly hard to come by, as most are held by museums or in private collections. The drum is worn on the sides, where it was struck with the mallet, leaving the splendid character and patina from a bygone era. The deeply sculptural form of this pieceis utterly sublime visually as well asmost tactilely pleasing. A magnificent work of art and wonderful conversation piece.
Of significant size, measuring approximately 14.5\" high and 11.5\" in width.
Quite a long process went into creating fine examples such as this one. Handsomely crafted of wood, dried completely, intricately hand carved and honed to get the tone just right, then sanded smooth, after whichlayers of lacquer were applied, each requiring time to dry slowly before the next was brushed on. Would have taken many months to complete a piece of this magnificent quality. Exhibiting the traditional elegance of the Tokugawa Period, this superb woodentemple bell would make an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of world class Japanese antiques. Absolutelyexquisite example of the strength and presence of Japanese craftsmanship.

Wabi-sabi is the quintessential Japanese aesthetic. It is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional... It is also two separate words, with related but different meanings. \"Wabi\" is the kind of perfect beauty that is seemingly-paradoxically caused by just the right kind of imperfection, such as an asymmetry in a ceramic bowl which reflects the handmade craftsmanship, as opposed to another bowl which is perfect, but soul-less and machine-made. \"Sabi\" is the kind of beauty that can come only with age, such as chips, wear, or the subtle antique patina. It can also refer to quirks and anomalies arising from the process of construction, which add uniqueness and elegance to the object. Sabi is beauty or serenity that comes with age, when the life of the object and its impermanence are evidenced in its patina and wear, or in any visible repairs. In one sense wabi-sabi is a training whereby the student of wabi-sabi learns to find the most simple objects interesting, fascinating and beautiful. Fading autumn leaves would be an example. Wabi-sabi can change our perception of the world to the extent that a chip or crack in a vase makes it more interesting and gives the object greater meditative value. Similarly materials that age such as bare wood, paper and fabric become more interesting as they exhibit changes that can be observed over time.
