WHAT is THIS???

This (Hyponar) is an extremely rarestereo lens, made to attach on Exakta SLR cameras and allowing you to take macrostereo pictures. This lens was designed by the inventor of theStereo Realist camera, Seton Rochwite. The rarity of this lensmake it desirable to not only stereo shooters but also to collectors. Itis said that only 75 of these were made.

Charles Piper in his Technical Page (Installment #53) talks about the Hyponarand its close relative the Kindar:

KinDar and Hyponar are two vintages of thesame device, a stereo close-up lens that fits the old Exakta VX, VX-IIa,VX-IIb, invented by Seton Rochwite of Stereo Realist fame. The lensassembly replaces the regular camera lens and produces a geometricallycorrect stereo pair. The Kindar/Hyponar is unique in that operateswith a reflex camera so \"what you see is what you get\".
The K/H has two 35mm lenses set 5/8\"apart in a lens board which fits the outer ears of the Exakta flange.The focus is fixed at 9\". Focusing at other distances isaccomplished by placing a single large auxiliary lens in front of the K/H.The Hyponar produced in 1969 by Rochwite has standard series VII threads.
To attach the K/H to the Exakta first makesure that the mirror is up. Always press the shutter release of theExakta before attempting to install or remove the K/H from the body!Depending on the subject distance one can attach the appropriate auxiliarylenses. Most users fine focus by moving the camera toward or away fromthe subject while watching the image on the ground glass. For table tops thewaist finder is best. The pentaprism is better for portraits

Can I use it?

Sure you can! You will take great half-frame macrostereo pictures (the lens divides the standard full frame into two stereo halvesof 18x24mm dimensions. The advantage of this configuration vs. the MacroStereo Realist is that here you can see what you are taking a picture of,through the viewfinder. Charles Piper in hisTechnical Page notes that he shoots live insects using a Hyponar attachment onan Exakta VX and two small strobes. He could be using a Macro Realist buthe preferred the Hyponar.

At the NSA Convention in Grand Rapids MI (2009), wewere treated to a program with the best PSA stereo slides from the 1950s and60s. About 1 out of 3-4 pictures were taken with a Hyponar or Kindar andExacta. The same exactly outfit that you see here.

Other facts about theHyponar & Exakta body

There is a viewfinder mask installed on the focusing screen so that onlyone image can be seen in the finder.

The pentaprism is non-metered.

The flash sync is at 1/30 second.

The aperture settings on the Hyponar extend from f/4 to beyond f/32 withno click-stops.

There is a film-cutting knife inside the Exakta body.

The Hyponar\'s front cap is a clip-on generic one.

There is no rear cap for the Hyponar nor a body cap for the camera.

Cosmetic Condition

The glass on theHyponar is very close to pristine with just a few very minor very lightscratches on the front element. It should have no effect on image quality.

There is some paintloss on the Hyponar\'s filter threads.

The camera\'sleatherette is in excellent condition with just a couple of very small scuffmarks near the PC outlets on the front.

There is what lookslike a pi symbal etched onto the rear right side of the pentaprism, probablyput there by a previous user.

The Hyponar\'s septumis not bent in any way and is strictly perpendicular to the lens board.

The Exakta instructionbooklet has a plenty of creases but is complete.

There is very littlebrassing on either the camera or lens.

Mechanical Condition

The camera\'s shutterspeeds are approximately correct.

The camera has no filmadvance problems.

The Hyponar\'sdiamond-shaped apertures are equal in size.

In using this, I havenot experienced any vignetting (darkening of the frame corners). Could thatbe an indication that the original lenses were replaced at some point?

The lens stops downexactly as it should.

Rewinding the film canbe a bit frustrating; requiring constant pressure on the rewind knob.

IMPORTANT!!!
The Hyponar must never bemounted or removed from the Exakta while the shutter is cocked. Doing so coulddestroy a very valuable lens!
