Small Russian Fairy Tale Lacquered Box with Gold Leaf Accents

I tried to find out the name of the fairy tale upon which this box is based; but unfortunately, I could not find any illustrations to solve that mystery.

Box measures 2 1/2\" square by 1 1/4\" high and has a hinged lid.Red lacquer inside, with black and red on the lid.

This is definitelynot one of thoseextremely fine, highly-polished and expensive lacquered boxes for which Russia is most famous. The fairy tale on the raised domehas beenhand-painted by a talented artist, along with the gold leaf designs. However, the box itselfhas not been highly finished.We bought this as a souvenir in St. Petersburg while on a cruise to theBaltic .... you know how it goes: you get caught up in the culture and mystique of a foreign country and simply have to bring home a memento; then you get it home and ask yourself, \"What am I going to do with this?\" .... Don\'t get me wrong, it\'s a very lovely piece andisbeautifully hand-painted by a talented craftsman,but that magic moment has since passed. It\'s just been sitting in a drawer, not having \"seen the light of day\" since I brought it home. It\'s time for it to goto ahome where it will be loved and appreciated.
