Handwritten Civil War Union Officer\'s Reminiscences - New York 44th Volunteer Infantry.

A fascinating collection of approximately 130 handwritten pages, loosely bound together with strings. Paper measures 5\" x 8\". A remarkable and interesting read. This appears to be handwritten war reminiscences of a Union Officer. I believe it to have been written sometime shortly after the war, as some of the notes take on a comprehensive feel to them. Lots of numbers/stats of those killed, wounded, paroled, etc. Also shared are anecdotal stories of rounding up \"raiders\", giving them a trial and then hanging them. Many many first hand accounts. The entire collection is essentially broken down into 5 hand-numbered groupings, with the handwriting and ink used varying between the different groupings. As noted, these are loosely bound together in period string, and this was how I came across them. I believe them to be all related in one way or another, but additional research on the content would be needed to verify. Either way this a very interesting first-hand account of the war from the Union perspective. I\'m unclear as to whether any of this has ever been published. While there are lots of names listed, it is difficult to pinpoint the author(s). Towards the end, there also appears to be drafts of speeches given to fellow soldiers. Again, some first-hand material certain worth a trained Civil War historian\'s keen eye. I\'m attributing this collection to the New York 44th Volunteer Infantry because they are specifically called out in the text, but its entirely possible this could be linked to another unit or division. One thing is for certain, there is no doubting this is from the Union perspective!

I\'ve done my best to describe the work, but if you have additional questions, please don\'t hesitate to send me an e-mail and I will do my best to answer it for you.
