This is the handwritten diary/journal of Pvt. John S. Gray of the Union Army.It begins on Jan 1st, 1863.There are about 73 pages of entries, all of which are legible, although some arefaded more than others. There are also several pages of poems he had pasted intothe book. Perhaps they brought him some measure of solace at times. There is alsoevidence that some pages were removed, perhaps by the soldier himself when he wrote letters.I regret to say I have little information on this soldier. His unit, as much as I can ascertain, was the 1st Kansas Battery. In the journal somenames mentioned are Lt. Kearney and Sgt. Irwin. He states that the Governor of Kansasis James M. Harvey. I believe John S. Gray was also from Kansas.
The diary is in delicate condition and has suffered through time. Still, it is an opportunity toaccompany John S. Gray through part of his tour of duty.
Sleep in Peace John S. Gray.
