Hannah Maynard (1834-1918) set up a photo studio on Vancouver Island, British Columbia in 1862, when it was very unconventional for a woman to go into business. She did portraits and landscapes that helped document the early history of northwest Canada, but her most adventuresome work was eclectic, surreal and unique. She experimented with multiple exposure, photosculpture, composite images and cut and paste montage.
