I\'ve restored over 150 Harman Kardon tube amplifiers and receivers and sold many of them on , see response on my HK items at end of listing. Check my listings for some of my other HK items for sale.

Thisis a time capsule Harman Kardon refurbishedtube typeA224stereo integrated amplifier, called the Trio, serial number 2574336.The A224 is one of the nicest EL84 tube amps of that era (about1959), 12 WPC, nice features, good looking and performing compactamp.

Ihad an HK A300 amp in collegein the 1960\'s and always lovedit\'s sound.I am a retired electrical engineer and have beenrestoring HK tube amps and receiversfor afew years now asa hobby. Not any real money in it, but I enjoy making theseunits reliable and available to a new generation of tube folks. I\'velearned all that I can about these amps and have been successful intheir restoration.

Inever put power to theseamps without first replacing theelectrolytic and paper/ plastic coupling capacitors.

Itis strongly recommended (Google ‘recapping radios’) that theelectrolytic and paper or molded (original disc mica type are OK)coupling capacitors be replaced in old tube units.Some peoplesay it\'s OK just to \'reform\' the power supply caps. (bring them upvery slowly over a couple of days on a variac). While this is amuch simpler and less costly alternative, I\'m not convinced that itis a good as replacing dried out caps with new current fresh stock.See the last two pictures, \'before\' and \'after\' recapping. Afterrestoration I also verified the B+ voltages and critical componentsare to specification.

Thisrestoration does not modify the wonderful \'tube sound\'--noreal modifications, but rather put back the way the HK engineersdesigned it, only make the unit safer and more reliable.

Inaddition to replacing the electrolytic and paper/molded couplingcapacitors (using premium Orange Drop 716\'s for the couplingcapacitors), I have tested all the tubes on myB&K 707tubetester—and replacedany that were marginal. I also havecleaned the tubes, tube sockets, controls and switches (Deoxit D5contact cleaner for the tube sockets and switches, F5 FaderLube for the potentiometers). The four output EL84 output tubes are a new Sovtek matched quad.

Ihave verified all the operations. The controls and switches have nonoise. All the inputs are operational. I have run this unit8hours without any issues after the refurbishing.

Thisamp appearance is very good, the faceplate looks nice,Iseeveryminor mars andscratches, a scratch on the lower RH corner, and some waviness on the lower LH corner, see pic., the knobs are excellent, all the letteringislegible and distinct--see the pictures. One very nice featureof the A224 is that they all originally came with a tube cover. I striped and repainted the cover, not perfectbutnice. The amp size is a nicesize-compact, about the size of a turntable, see pic--OK, I must sayturntable not included.

TheA224, as a tube unit has a sound unlike solid state units. These were(and are) highly regarded amplifiers, and have that highly desired‘tube sound’. Interesting that HK is one of the very few hi-ficompanies of the 1960\'s to still be in business.

Asa stereo integrated amplifier, there are inputs for lo level(magnetic) phono or tape head, hi level (ceramic) phono, tuner andauxiliary inputs. The controls are: Source Selector, Mode, Loudness(Volume), Bass, Treble (with power switch), Balance, and Blend. Switches are provided for rumble filter, contour,andspeaker selection.

TheA 224 has an interesting circuit design. Itcan operate intwo different modes, first as a 12 watt/channel stereo amplifier, oras a stereo preamp and mono 24 watt power amplifier. There is aLH preamp out to feed a second power amplifier for this mode. Instereo mode it is configured to drive two sets of speakers.Great for speaker A/B comparison. These are covered in a copyof the operators manual to be emailed to the winning buyer.

Themajor specs are:

IMHFmusic output power—12 watts per channel stereo, or 24 wattsmono—this was back when power ratings meant something—plenty ofpower forefficient speakers—but it won\'t drive you out of theroom. For speakers, folks like all the old Klipschs, and I personallylike the Electrovoice 12TRXB\'s--a very nice horn type triax.

Outputimpedance—8, 16 and 32 ohm, Speaker set A or Speaker Set B

Stereoinputs—low level—RIAA (phono) and NARTB (tape head) equilizations

Stereoinputs—high level –Aux, ceramic phono, tuner —this is suitableinput for tuners, CD decks, and most MP3 players, phones and tablets.

Stereotape outputs—to feed a tape recorder or second amp.

LHpreamp out--to feed a second power amplifier.

Tubecompliment--10 tubes, all are desirable types.

The A224 operates only on 115VAC, so for international buyers, if your service is 220VAC, you will need a stepdown transformer rated at a .25 kva or greater.

Now,my lecture. This is not your son\'s amplifier. This is a tube unit,and as such, has voltages inside the chassis that can be lethal, 350+volts. Also, it has tubes and a power transformer that gets hot.Although it is rated for 100% duty cycle (you can listen to itindefinitely), when you are done listening, best to turn it off.

Butafter listening to a tube amplifier, you may find yourself on buying up turntables and record changers, collections of vinyl(records), and turning the lights down just so you can watch thesoft orange glow of the tube filaments, and talking about bias, tuberolling, and \"gee I need to get another system for the familyroom\". Can be a slippery slope.
