\"Ulysses S. Grant – 1870 – 9.25 inch State Dinner Plate - By a French Manufacturer but made by Haviland and Company; Limoges hand-painted rendering by a gifted artist featuring the Rose - A total of 24 different flowers were used on the Grant service. When President and Mrs. Grant moved in the Executive Mansion in March 1869, Mrs. Grant began at once to renovate to her own taste. Her first purchases for The White House commenced immediately and she continued to buy items for the next 6 months.
In June 1869, Mrs. Grant was on full steam ahead to order State Dinner China; and did so through a Washington D.C. Dealer, J. W. Botler and Bros, located a mere 12 blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue. They had been supplying miscellaneous china to the Executive Mansion for several years and they ordered the Grant China from Haviland and Company as Haviland had been winning prizes in World Exhibitions - especially in the Great Exhibition held in London in 1851. When the State Dinner China finally arrived, it consisted of only 587 pieces with Flowers and a top center logo - known as the “Coats Of Arms”.\"
In 1970, Haviland made a limited edition of 3,000 signed and numbered plates - \"authentic reproduction of a plate of White House china made by Haviland at Limoges, France, for President Ulysses S. Grant and delivered on February 10, 1870.\" - Theodore Haviland.
