These fine Counters are one-of-a-kind gems of Chinese Art, all hand engraved, mostly around 200 plus years ago. If you are looking for high quality Counters, craftsmanship in China reached its peak in the period from 1780 - 1800. Often crafted now into exquisite pieces of jewelry, they were originally gambling counters made during the \'Ching\' Dynasty, the last Dynasty of Imperial China. They were designed for the British who ordered them in boxed sets through the Far East India Company, trading with China in this period.
\"Things of Beauty can become the source of purity, happiness, and inspiration; works of art can ennoble and raise the consciousness of people.\"
Most of the counters would have been made while the brilliant Philosopher - Emperor, Ch\'ien Lung was in power 1736 - 1796. This peaceful period of the Ching Dynasty, was famous for its superior art work, reaching its height in craftsmanship around c.1780 - c.1800. The exceptionally high quality of craftsmanship exhibited by these pieces can even be noted at extremely high magnification. The equally beautiful heavily carved counters are cut from thicker pearl shell, and would have been carved c.1800 - c.1820, around the period when another Philosopher - Ruler, \'Chia Ching\' was Emperor.Most of the pieces show story-poem scenes of people in various life situations,both at work and at play, often employing a literary or counseling pose.Other items frequently portrayed are animals, birds, fish and insects. These symbolic scenes are thought to be the master craftsman\'s interpretation of Emperor Chien Lung\'s 34,000 philosophical poems written to bring China and her people back to a state of spirituality and peace after the preceding,long and warring \'Ming\' dynasty.
The 34,000 poems were a summation of many of the Chinese philosophies from the past, especially those of Confucius, Loa-tzu and Mencius.The Crafting Of These Counters Was Never Recorded; They Cannot Be Reproduced Today.
These Works Of Art Are Antique Investment Quality Items As Well As Wonderful Focal Points For Exquisite Jewelry.
